"Learn to say no without apology"

Saying no reclaimed my time and taught me who actually valued my presence.

"'No' is the most honest word I learned in my twenties."

I used to answer every favor request with a yes, my calendar a patchwork of obligations and my chest a tight drawer. The smell of fast food at midnight meant another deadline I had agreed to while my own work cooled on the table. Each yes pried a little more of me away until I had only hollow politeness left.

One evening I turned down a volunteer shift to finish a painting, the room smelling like turpentine and toast. My friend texted confusion then respect. Saying no felt like speaking a foreign language at first. Over time my no formed into sentences that left space for others to step up and for me to say yes to things that mattered.

No is the most honest word I learned in my twenties.
